Jamaican Patty

 
The Jamaican patty is certainly the most famous pastry on the island. Patty as it is referred to by Jamaicans can be made with almost any meat and vegetable baked inside that flaky shell. These vegetable stuffing could be any one or a combination of cabbage, calaloo, pak chow.  Shrimp, lobster, chicken, fish, ackee, soy with or without cheese are just some of what have been explored  successfully by bakers. However, the traditional and still the number one filling is ground beef.
The crust or shell is usually thin and most noted for its yellow tint. This color came by as a result of  turmeric and egg yolk. Patties are really famous in Jamaica and patty shops are always full during lunch hours. This is really the fastest and probable the most economical way to have lunch. It is also one of the more convenient meals to have while on the go.
Today the Jamaican patty has become quite famous in other countries. Some countries in the region such as Costa Rica and Haiti do have a large following that enjoy this pasty. Jamaicans have a way of bringing their culture with them across the world and with over 2 million Jamaicans living aboard well you can imagine that patty is in sight. In Canada, USA , UK and other countries that have a large concentration of Jamaicans the patty business has grown immensely there. In fact these days one will find frozen patties that only need to be pop in the Microwave or oven. There is also the small bite-sized patties which are suited for picnics and parties.
