Bun and Cheese A Jamaican Tradition
It is Easter time again and Jamaicans home and throughout the diaspora are relishing in the tradition of having bun and cheese or escovitch fish. The tradition of having bun and cheese during Easter came from the English who was once the colonizer of Jamaica. They introduced a hot cross bun spiced with currants or raisins which was traditionally eaten on Good Fridays.
It is not clear who or what started this tradition, however some claimed that the Greeks who had mark cakes with a cross, pointed the tradition directly to the goddess Eostre, hence we know have Easter. However, what is for sure is that whatever was introduced to Jamaica has morphed into a larger, wholesome, dense, fruit-filled bun that is shaped like a loaf of bread served with cheddar cheese or escovitch fish
Easter is special time in Jamaica. It is the only time on the calendar with a four- day weekend holiday starting from Good Friday and ending on the following Monday which is called Easter Monday. There are many activities going on around this time which is really a time of fun for almost every one…. Happy Easter Holidays…
