The Jamaican currency is bank notes issued in the amounts of $50, $100, $500 and $1000 and $5,000. Influential Jamaicans such as National heroes and past Prime Ministers portraits are featured on these notes. The Jamaican currency does not have a fix rate at the moment. Consequently it fluctuates but mainly weakens on a daily basis. To ensure that you get the best rate, we recommend that you wait until you are in Jamaica to change your currency. Often times one can spend other major currencies instead of the Jamaican currency. This however is not encouraged.
Changing your money to the Jamaican currency is very fast and easy. There are many cambios all over Jamaica but it is recommended that you change your currency at the cambios within the airports, at the hotels, cruise ports, supermarkets that has a cambio sign and banks as this will allow you a great amount of convenience.
If you are the type that travels cashless with plastic there is no need to worry. Most establishments accept payments with major credit cards. The majority of the ATM machines recognize cards with Cirrus and Plus logos. You will be given cash in Jamaican currency at the present rate. The Jamaican currency has slowly lost its value and has fluctuated consistently over the last three decades. In fact thirty-three years ago 1 (JMD) valued 1.25 (USD) a far cry from what it is today. As of June 2009 the Jamaican currency is $89.00 (JMD) to $1.00 (USD).
Make no mistake after changing your money into Jamaican currency that you are now rich. Many of the prices are quoted towards US currency. As a result 1 USD or 1 CND changed into Jamaican currency will not buy anything more that it would have done in your own country.
